WAN acceleration startup Seranoa Networks Inc. appears to be headed for the all-too-familiar assets sale.
Sources say the company is either dead or at least pining for the fjords. Repeated calls to various Seranoa officials were not returned, and board member Tim Kraskey of YankeeTek Ventures told Light Reading he couldn't comment on Seranoa's situation.

Computer grids are emerging as potential application servers for mainstream business uses, which could broaden their deployment in corporate enterprises, said IT managers and vendors who attended the GlobusWorld conference here last week.

But Robert Ortega, Wachovia's vice president of architecting and engineering, said he believes grid computing may be ready for broader use. "We have started thinking of the grid as a virtual application server," said Ortega, who outlined his work with the technology during a presentation at the conference.

Wachovia is testing a new version of New York-based DataSynapse Inc.'s GridServer software, which would allow Ortega to move application servers based on technology such as J2EE or .Net to the grid. "We're looking at this thing as a platform for running the services that make up an SOA," he said, referring to a service-oriented architecture.

The box will reportedly appear as part of the networking giant's Catalyst Ethernet switch line, equipped with dual Intel Xeon-powered blades. Moreover, the source said Cisco has hired Taf Anthias, the former CTO of IBM's MQSeries middleware group, to lead an engineering team to make products that address XML messaging.

OTTAWA — Canadian officials Tuesday confirmed the discovery of a new case of mad cow disease in a Charolais beef cow from the province of Alberta.
This is Canada's third case of mad cow disease and the second one discovered this month. The news comes just 10 days after the disease was found in a Holstein dairy cow in Alberta.

Start-up NeoAccel says its SSL remote-access gateway will overcome one source of delay that its competitors don't address: making the gear suitable for use on Wi-Fi networks.

NeoAccel gear, on the other hand, uses a single TCP session to control the SSL link to the gateway and the tunnel connecting the remote client to the target server. With just one TCP connection between the remote machine and the gateway, delays will be reduced, Susai says. Because Wi-Fi networks are known for higher packet loss than wired ones, the TCP-delay problem is more pronounced, he says, and SSL VPN-Plus can help alleviate it.
