Top consumer electronics firms join on DRM spec

A group of top consumer electronics companies have teamed with DRM (digital rights management) technology developer Intertrust Technologies Corp. to draft a specification the gadget makers hope will enable consumers to run licensed media files on a range of devices.
Called the Marlin Joint Development Association, the initiative includes Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. (better known by its Panasonic brand name), Royal Philips Electronics NV, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Sony Corp. Philips and Sony are both investors in Intertrust, the Sunnyvale, California, developer that will coordinate the effort.
これに先立つ2004.8月、OASISでXrMLを作っていたRLTCが解散したが、これはInterTrustのMSに対する特許訴訟が関連したとの事。

その後、ContentGuardがXrML仕様をMPEGに持ち込み、MPEG RELに至ったらしい。
OASIS WSSのREL Token ProfileはISO/IEC 21000-5 Rights Expressionsを参照している。
