面白かった。この人の本は面白いなあ。ドゥームズデイ・ブックは悲しくなっちゃったけど、これは明るく楽しく、ほんわかかしてる。 話は大きな川が流れるようにゆったり進んでいって、最後にあれよあれよと謎解きモード。前半のゆったりさ加減は主人公ネッド・ヘンリーのボケ振りが大きいのかな。ヴェリティ/ナイアス(水の精)はもうちょっとヒロイン場面があってもいいのに。
のんびりした情景とは裏腹にとてもややこしい話なので、もう一度しっかり読んでみたい。

SAN DIEGO -- Websense, Inc. (Nasdaq: WBSN - News), the world's leading provider of employee internet management software, today announced its financial results for the fourth quarter and fiscal year ended December 31, 2004.
Revenue in the fourth quarter was a record $31.7 million, an increase of 40 percent from the fourth quarter of 2003. Fourth quarter net income increased 80 percent from the fourth quarter of 2003, to $8.1 million, or 33 cents per diluted share. For the year, revenue was $111.9 million, an increase of 37 percent from 2003, and net income was $26.2 million, or $1.09 per diluted share, an increase of 57 percent from 2003.

And Navitaire Inc., a Minneapolis-based application service provider that houses reservation systems for low-cost airlines, expects to slash infrastructure costs in half by leveraging application development tools and Web services in Microsoft Corp.'s .Net platform to migrate its applications.

RouteOne, a joint venture of DaimlerChrysler Services North America LLC, Ford Motor Credit Co., General Motors Acceptance Corp. and Toyota Financial Services Corp. that was formed to provide a Web-based credit application management system, has built its entire business on XML and Web services.
"Security was a gimme for us [because] it is the dealers' customer data going across," said T.N. Subramaniam, chief architect at RouteOne in Farmington Hills, Mich. "We tried to do it in software by rolling our own, but it was too slow for the volume of messaging."
The company now uses Cambridge, Mass.-based DataPower Technology Inc.'s secure gateway product, a wire-speed XML-aware networking device that digitally encrypts and signs the entire payload of RouteOne's messages without affecting performance, Subramaniam said.

Cisco Systems is beefing up its investment in software-related technologies in an effort to capture a larger chunk of technology budgets and spur revenue growth.
The networking giant is evaluating ways to extend beyond its core switching and routing businesses and slice off corporate spending typically devoted to software purchases, according to people familiar with Cisco's plans. As part of the strategy, the company is ramping up its internal development in software "plumbing" and evaluating whether to acquire a smaller company, sources said.
Cisco's bread-and-butter business is gear that transports packets of network traffic across companies or over the public Internet. Now the company is looking to enhance its routers and switches with the ability to handle network messages that carry XML documents, said people familiar with Cisco's plans. Rather than push IP packets around a network, the new products would transport XML documents and provide basic routing capabilities based on the contents of XML messages.

"Cisco has talked about the ability to help companies with network-based business processes," said Jon Oltsik, an analyst at researcher Enterprise Strategy Group. "XML or Web services are going to be core to new kinds of network business processes, so this area is right down Broadway."

A group of top consumer electronics companies have teamed with DRM (digital rights management) technology developer Intertrust Technologies Corp. to draft a specification the gadget makers hope will enable consumers to run licensed media files on a range of devices.
Called the Marlin Joint Development Association, the initiative includes Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. (better known by its Panasonic brand name), Royal Philips Electronics NV, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Sony Corp. Philips and Sony are both investors in Intertrust, the Sunnyvale, California, developer that will coordinate the effort.

Cisco's Secret Software Strategy
Sources say Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO - message board) has launched a long-term software initiative that could bring the company closer to IBM Corp.'s (NYSE: IBM - message board) model of offering full consulting services.
Cisco has already set up a special software group (yet unnamed) to develop middleware, Web applications, and services products, says one reliable source who is close to the company but asked to remained unnamed. Other sources say Cisco has indeed set up a new software group but that it may have less dramatic goals.

With $2.3 trillion in assets under its management in 97 financial markets, multi-bank holding company Northern Trust treats business processes such as auditing, logging and security with the utmost seriousness.
The framework, created using Management Foundation from AmberPoint, allows for the first time interoperability between development environments that Northern Trust uses for online applications. "This nestles right into the Java space and right into the [Microsoft] .Net space, with very little custom coding required," Lind says.
Northern Trust has used BEA Systems' WebLogic application server, which supports the Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition platform, for about five years. In late 2003, it upgraded to the latest version - 8.1, aimed at SOA development - coincident with bringing .Net in house. Lind says .Net appealed to the architecture division for a number of reasons: the component-oriented Visual C# programming language, the rapid development environment, ease of integration with other Microsoft applications, and availability of .Net applications from independent software vendors.

Commentary--Federated identity management and Web services are uniquely intertwined, mutually reliant on each other, and are poised to finally solve a long-running problem in both IT and systems security. From e-business transactions over the Internet to logins for the employee HR portal, uniform access control and robust management tools are required to securely enable connectivity for customers, partners and employees. Yet user databases and access policies are often fragmented, requiring multiple logins for users and repetitive tasks for systems administrators.

Indeed, identity information and access control policies are some of the most valuable and frequently used data in any IT organization--chances are, every application and every system needs to be able to access it. Just as other large scale integration challenges are increasingly addressed by employing Web services protocols, it makes a lot of sense to do the same for access control. Instead of coding to a proprietary agent (which in turn uses a proprietary protocol to communicate with a particular brand of identity management server), applications can make Web services (SOAP) requests to authenticate users or authorize transactions.

面白かった。
戦争の始まりから終戦までを柏堂(だったっけ？)の人々を中心に描く形だけど。 実際には各登場人物それぞれエピソードが展開されていって、オムニバスのような構成になってる。 言いたい事と、ギャグと、書き留めておきたい風俗を全部盛り込むためにこうなったんだろうか。 中盤の「虚構」としてもしも日本が勝っていたら、というSF仕立てが入るところなんか強引な気もするけど。 これを日本通のアメリカ人が書いている、というのがいかにも、ではあるけど得意のギャグになっていて。 その後の日本が負けていく展開とのコントラストがすごい。
参考文献に、「高い城の男｣が入ってるのがびっくり。 ディックを参考にしてこんなギャグになるか？
でも結局は、いちいちこの人特有の表現が出てくるのがうれしくて、たのしくて。 史郎の人間観察が、もっとも著者の性格を表してるのではないかと。

If you wanted to design a language for high-speed processing and transactions, you could probably do better than XML. But the question is: Could a new format or standard achieve the widespread popularity of XML?
As Rich Salz, chief security architect for Cambridge, Mass.-based DataPower, points out, XML is similar to English. It’s not the most precise language in the world, but it’s the one most programmers speak. If you want to talk to programmers, English is good to know. If you want to develop Web services, XML is good to use.
"XML’s success is that while it's not great at everything, it's good enough for almost anything," he says.

１バイト系と２バイト系
コンピュータは英語圏で生まれた機械なので、文字列が処理できるようになっても当初は英語の文字しか扱えなかった。しかし日本ではやはり日本語が処理できないとまずいため、日本語のコードが定められることになる。
さて英語では文字はアルファベットが大小26文字ׯ??＋数字10個とあとは特殊文字だけなので、ASCIIは7bit(128個)もあれば十分足りていた。ただし7bitというのはコンピュータの処理単位としては中途半端なので8bitで処理するようになっていた。しかし8bitでは256文字しか使えない。これでは日本語の文字は全然足りない。

面白かった。
やっぱりこの人はうまいな。進化の仕組みに対するアイディアと、病気の係わり合いが、いまひとつ消化しきれなかった気もするけど。壮大なアイディアとなんとも優しい書き方が、すごくいい。
女性科学者ケイ・ラングの孤軍奮闘。自分を切り開いていく。じれったい時もあるけど、次第に自立して自分にこだわって進んでいく歩みが小気味いい。
昔、Blood Musicを読んだ時は面白いんだけど無機質な感触があった気がするけど、最近はこの人の本を読む度に満足してしまう。また、この人の本は読もう。
そういえば、翻訳者が大森 望さんという人だけど、最近この人の作品が多い気がする。 というよりいい訳だなと思ったらこの人だったということか。 大森氏が訳しているコニー・ウィリスとグレッグ・ベア、というラインアップが僕にあってるのかもしれない。

In an effort to give customers more focused control over internal and non-IBM external enterprise data stores, IBM is planning to add native XML support to its relational DB2 Universal Database wrapped around new indexing capabilities.
ADVERTISEMENT An expanded beta test for the enhanced DB2 technology, which is currently available in alpha format for a few select IBM customers, is planned for the first half of this year. No official timetable has been set for general release of the new technology—which may be offered as part of an integrated DB2 upgrade or as a stand-alone product, according to Janet Perna, general manager of data management solutions at IBM Software Group, in Armonk, N.Y.
